38 lessons that will help you write a good business email

38 lessons that will help you write a good business email38 lessons that will help you write a good business emailI had to write emails every day for 4 years in a high-pressured sales environment. During that time I screwed up a lot. I let my emotions show in emails, made the mistake of being too casual, and sent novella-length emails that were probably never read and should have been conversations in person.

7 Life Lessons We Learned Through Resume Writing

7 Life Lessons We Learned Through Resume Writing7 Life Lessons We Learned Through Resume Writing7 Life Lessons We Learned Through Resume WritingSometimes, its better to leave it to the pros. Why buy when you can DIY? Thats the question project manager, Will Cornell asked himself many times over when he first learned about TopResumes writing services. Not only did Will learn the answer the hard way, but he also almost lost his dream job in the process. Read on to spare yurself the struggleAs a technical project manager, Will prides himself on his natural curiosity and desire to problem-solve. He often gravitates towards a trial-by-error means of troubleshooting and hours of YouTube tutorials to consulting a trained professional.I enjoy getting my hands dirty, whether that means building something from scratch or digging deep into a process or project to get to the root of a problem.Despite his do-it-yourself ethos, there are few things Will would much rather leave in the hands of the experts performing surgery, filing taxes, and recently, resume writing.Lesson 1 DONT put off the inevitableAfter working for the same company for six years it was time for a change. I wanted something fresh and new, even if it meant moving out of my comfort zone. Six years can feel like a lifetime in the tech industry, and I knew the longer I waited, the harder it would be to leave. Lucky for Will, our writers were there to make his transition back into the job market as painless as possible. His writer, Traci, was able to transform his six-year tenure into a story of professional and personal development. It was important that Will show a thirst for growth in such a rapidly evolving industry.Lesson 2 DONT take it personallySo, what made this professional problem-solver let another pro solve his problem?Honestly, I was too close to it. It sounds strange, but the process of writing your own resume can be emotional. Its a lot like cleaning out a closet you know not everything can mak e the cut, but its hard not to be precious about the things youve accomplished. Will is right when it comes to resume writing, its not always as simple as asking yourself if a project or achievement sparks joy. Sometimes you need to call in a professional to cut through the clutter and leave only the most valuable information behind.Lesson 3 DO write for the job you wantBefore turning to TopResume, I was hitting a lot of walls. I was lucky if I heard back, but even when I did get a call I would get halfway through a screener before either the recruiter or I would realize it wasnt a good fit. Im a solid worker with years of experience, I just wasnt writing for the job I really wanted. And thats the thing, resumes arent just a chronological list of what youve done, but what you want to do.Lesson 4 DO trust an expertMake no mistake, telling your career story is no easy feat, especially when you cant always find the wordsEven though I knew what I had accomplished and what I wanted to acco mplish in the future, I struggled to put it down on paper. Traci practically read my mind, putting things into words that were stuckverzierung in my head.Lesson 5 DONT let fear of rejection hold you backWill was an instant fan of his new resume, but at this point in his job search it really didnt matter what he thought was it enough to land him an interview?Once I got my new resume back from TopResume I was hesitant to share it right away. I thought it was great, but what if recruiters didnt bite? What if I was doomed to stay in my current location forever?Spoiler alert Will did not, in fact, receive a life sentence at his job and did continue to apply with his shiny new resume.Lesson 6 DO know your worthAfter Will posted his updated resume to online job boards, he noticed a subtle, yet meaningful, change almost immediately.Just one day after I posted my new resume I saw a noticeable shift in the type of positions being sent my way. Not just in the industries and titles, but in the pay too. Until that moment I had surrendered to the idea of taking a salary cut, but was pleasantly surprised this wasnt the case. Its not uncommon for job seekers to undersell themselves in their resume and cover letters, especially when theyve been out of practice for a while. Teaming up with a pro like Traci can help set reasonable expectations based on your work experience and properly articulate your worth.Lesson 7 DONT give up on your dreamsAnd now for the plot twist The position Will accepted, in the end, was at his dream company, which had previously passed on him as a candidate.I took a chance and reapplied for a different position with a different resume. Im glad I did it. Their recruiter contacted me immediately and Im already a couple of weeks into my first month in the role.Wed say the rest is history, but we truly hope Will remembers this next time hes due for a resume updateAre you stuck in your own resume rut? Four Ways to Get an Early Discharge From the Military

Four Ways to Get an Early Discharge From the MilitaryFour Ways to Get an Early Discharge From the MilitaryThere are a variety of ways to get kicked out of the military, but there are also ways to leave the military early with good standing, legitimately. However, these are notlage common methods many people are able to use to get out of their military contract. Here are four types of early outs Conscientious Objector Discharge A member who can convince the military that they are a conscientious objector may request a discharge. This is not as easy as it sounds. First, you would have to show that your beliefs changed significantly after you joined the militarybecause you must certify that you are not a conscientious objector at the time of voluntary enlistment. You cant plektrum and choose which war you object to. By law, a conscientious objector is one who is opposed to participation in all wars. The persons opposition must be based on religious belief and training, and it must be deeply held. The applicant must show that these moral and ethical convictions, once acquired, have directed their life in the way traditional religious convictions of equal strength, depth, and duration have directed the lives of others. In other words, the belief upon which conscientious objection is based must be the primary controlling force in the applicants life. The burden of establishing a claim of conscientious objection as grounds for separation is on the applicant. To this end, applicants must establish, by clear and convincing evidence, that the nature or basis of the claim comes within the definition of criteria prescribed by DoD Directive 1300.6, Conscientious Objectors, for conscientious objection and that their beliefs are sincere. When evaluating applications for this status, commanders consider relevant factors including training in the home and church general demeanor and pattern of conduct participation in religious activities whether ethical or moral convictions were gained through training, study, contemplation, or other activity comparable in muskelsteifheit and dedication to the processes by which traditional religious convictions are formulated credibility of the applicant and credibility of persons supporting the claim. Early Release for Education Department of Defense Directives allow a military member to be discharged early to pursue their education if they are within 90 days of their normal separation date. Sometimes a service will approve an educational discharge request of more than 90 days. For example, Air Force personnel can request separation after two years of service, if they have been accepted at an accredited school for medical training as physicians, dentists, osteopaths, veterinarians, optometrists, or clinical psychologists. Not just any schooling will suffice. The Navy Personnel Manual allows sailors to request a discharge for education in excess of 90 days, but the approval authority for a 90 day (or less) discha rge is the commanding officer (special court-martial authority), and for discharges for more than 90 days before the normal separation date, it goes all the way up to the commander of the Navy Personnel Command. Neither the Army regulation (AR 635-200)nor the Marine Corps regelung (MCO P1900-16F) allow for educational separations of more than 90 days prior to normal separation date. Military Hardship Discharges All of the services have procedures where a service member can request a discharge based on a valid hardship. Often, applicants find that they do not qualify. The militarysdefinition, to illustrate how hard it can be to qualify, is stated here In reservierung to qualify for separation under this provision, the hardship must not be of a temporary nature must have developed or become increasingly worse since entry on active duty discharge or release from active duty is the only readily available means of alleviation and the individual must have made reasonable effort to rel ieve the conditions through other means available and appropriate to the family circumstances. An example of a hardship discharge would be the death or permanent disability to the soldiers immediate family such as the spouse who is primary guardian to the children of the family when the soldier would be deployed. If you dont qualify for a hardship discharge, however, you might qualify for a humanitarian assignment. Convenience of the Government This is kind of a catch-all for voluntary separations that dont fall under specific programs. Note that its called convenience of the government, not convenience of the servicemember. One example would be discharge in order to enter a commissioning program. The military can also use this provision when it would really rather that you get outbut doesnt have a basis to require your separation under any other separation program. Another example would be if you won the state lottery and became a multi-millionaire overnight. The services proba bly would not find it conducive to morale and discipline to have a 3-striper millionaire arriving at work every day in his private helicopter. In such cases, they would most likely gladly approve a discharge request under convenience of the government. Military Service Commitments A service commitment is a period of obligated military service. For example, if you become anAir Force pilot, you have to agree to a service commitment of 12 years, following pilot training. Air Force pilot training is very expensive, and the Air Force wants to make sure they get their investment back. It may surprise you to learn that everyone who joins the military for the first time incurs a minimumeight-yearservice commitment. It doesnt matter if you signed a two-year active duty contract, a four-year contract, or even a six-year contract. Your total military commitment is eight years. Whatever amount of time that is not spent on active duty, must either be served in the active Guard/Reserves, or in the Inactive Reserves.

Why Lee DeWzye Won American Idol (and what it means for your job search)

Why Lee DeWzye Won American gtze (and what it means for your job search) Why Lee DeWzye Won American gtzenbild (and what it means for your job search) I watch American Idol religiously (What? Dont look at me like that). One of the things I love about it is that its like a really long job interview and we get to choose the person who ultimately gets the job. (Well, I must admit that I dont actually vote, but I still feel somehow like I did. I voted in my mind)Once I started thinking of it as a job interview, I started to get really good at picking the winner. This year, I knew Lee DeWyze would win about 4 weeks into the competition even though at the time everyone was talking about Crystal Bowersox. Crystal had more poise on stage, more control in her vocals and a strong sense of her own identity. These are all important criteria for success on American Idol which is why she made it all the way to the finale, but she was missing some of the key elements that make for success on Idol (and in a job search).A sense that she had something to learn and knew itIdol front-runners are often fully formed musicians by the time they come on the show. Theyve been performing in bars and clubs for years and theyve gained confidence in their own abilities. Theyre accomplished singers and they know it. But they often tend bedrngnis to grow as the season goes on, and after a while their poise starts to hurt them. Viewers (the interviewer) wonder if they have anything left to learn. Meantime, theres always some other contestant with an equal amount of talent but who has not yet fully realized their potential and who shows growth each week ashe or she learns more about the craft of performing. Carrie Underwood, David Cook and Kris Allen all fall into this category. This year that person was Lee.What does this mean for you?Im not suggesting that you go into interviews trying to look less talented than other people and then try to show growth during the meeting. That would be a rec ipe for disaster But I think the key lesson here is to demonstrate, in your resume and in your interview, that you are always eager to learn and grow. Nobody likes a know-it-all and a touch of humility goes a long way especially with the person who will ultimately be your boss. Authenticity Before Crystals fans start shouting at me that she is an authentic person I agree She seems very real and very nice, and thats why she made it all the way to 2. But Lee was even more authentic. While Crystal could hide her nerves, Lee seemed to wear every emotion on his sleeve. If he was scared you knew it. If he was confident, it came out in his performance. And his genuine surprise and relief every time he received a compliment was fun to watch. People connected with him because he didnt put up any barriers.Being authentic is key to job search successAnyone who reads this blog knows that I talk about authenticity all the time. I meet too many job seekers who want to present themselves as some thing other than what they are. Or who want to stuff their resume with long words and resume speak because they think it will impress people. It doesnt work Be genuine and real and people will respond to you. And when you go for interviews, let down your guard a little smile, show enthusiasm, be a human A current look and sound Idol viewers skew older (*cough* like me *cough*) but the voters skew young. Janis Joplin was successful a long time ago, and kids cant relate to that look or sound. Lee picked a string of recent hits and then put his own spin on them. That was smart. Not on LinkedIn? Not reading blogs? Not tweeting? Youre not current.I often have clients in their 40s and 50s who cant use Excel or Word. This is absolutely unacceptable in todays job market. But being able to use common software isnt enough anymore. The internet is revolutionizing communications at a faster and faster pace and you need to keep up. Tweeting and connecting on LinkedIn are not just a nice way to p ass the time, they a) show that you are current and b) offer lots of ways to network your way to a new job.To learn more about using these tools, check out Using Twitter for Job Search and The 7 Mistakes Youre Probably Making on LinkedIn. Dont be a throwbackIn the end, American Idol may be just a silly talent show, but it offers valuable lessons to anyone looking for work. (And if you dont believe me about these 3 criteria, try it yourself on next years show)Photo by Kristian Dowling/FOX/PictureGroup
