Candidates’ Priorities in the Modern Workplace As recruiters, we need to understand what makes our candidates tick. To gain a deeper insight into candidates’ priorities, Tiger Recruitment recently commissioned a survey of 1,000 UK employees, with interesting results. The survey revealed that the following values were most relevant to job seekers across the country, indiscriminate of sector or industry. Meaningful work For someone to find meaning in their work, their role must fulfill their individual goals and desires. This is entirely unique to each candidate, whether it’s working for a more sustainable or ethical company, performing a more challenging role, or choosing a job that fosters learning opportunities. The quest for meaningful work is now an integral part of our job search; it’s something that 33% of female employees and 27% of male employees look for in a new role, according to Tiger’s recent research. This is also something that is valued at a higher rate in millennial job seekers (37%), and trends show that this looks likely to increase year on year. Career progression Perhaps not surprisingly, career progression is one of the most important factors for job seekers. Men are looking for this in slightly higher numbers than women (33% to 27%). For some, career progression means seeing a higher salary with their move. Broken down by gender, 62% of men and 56% of women would actively seek a pay rise when changing jobs. Ultimately, it’s important to understand the motivations behind someone wanting to progress, as these will differ from employee to employee. Work-life blend A positive work-life blend is important to both female and male UK workers. According to our research, a surprisingly high number of men (40%) valued this over women (35%). Therefore, your clients should understand that what is desired by one employee in terms of the work-life blend may not necessarily work for someone else. Use this information to work with each employee to put together a solution that works for their lifestyle. How can employers best use the data to their advantage?   In light of the low unemployment rate in the UK, we’re continuing to operate in a candidate-short market. Therefore, your clients will want to do all that they can to be attractive to potential new recruits and existing employees. Establishing initiatives in the workplace that reflect the desires of your workforce makes good business sense. As with all workplace initiatives, it’s important to first identify exactly what each employee is looking for. This can be achieved by organizing an online feedback survey to understand the priorities of staff, which should guide any changes. This is an inexpensive yet effective way to gauge employee sentiment. Whether they be the implementation of flexible working, encouraging CSR initiatives, training opportunities, or creating clear career progression strategies, changes should be implemented with clear communication and processes. Investing the time to take these steps will reassure employees about the meaningfulness of their work and pave the way to attracting new talent.

Making the most of a Sector Specific Fair or Conference So, youre interested in attending an event in your sector the one youre passionate about!  Now might be a good time to think about why youre so  interested in this occupational area? Are there any holes in your knowledge about possible careers for you?  Do you have any idea about how to go about  finding your dream job?    Are there people it would be helpful to speak to?  How are you going to work out who they are? Perhaps theres a speaker that you want to  hear to  find out more about their research? There are many careers events for you to attend both on and off campus. Why do recruiters want to  come? It costs them  not just in entrance fees but more significantly in lost work time! Why do careers services and recruitment bodies invest resources and time to put the events on? The reason is simple  to help students meet employers and find out more about opportunities open to them. This is a great  way for you to network with recruiters and organisations. It gives you the opportunity to collect information to help you select companies that you wish to apply to and  (if you  make the most of the opportunity) helps you  to  make  strong and successful applications.  So, why should you attend? There are many reasons to attend the fair. Firstly, you can research what companies are offering and what they are looking for in a successful applicant. Yes, you can research this information on the internet, but  a fair  will you get the chance to ask questions prompted by your internet research. Dont be afraid to ask really specific questions. The person on the stand may not be able to answer you, but will note your keenness and should be able to arrange for someone else to give you the information.  Often Warwick Alumni are on the stands and this is your chance to ask them about their experiences of applying for jobs. You can even ask them about how they got their jobs? How much easier does this  make it for you to  form  a realistic and well informed decision  about your future (careers speak for getting the right job for you)? Secondly, you can network. This means that you can get contacts who also have contacts! Remember the expression ‘it’s not what you know but who you know?’ You may be on  LinkedIn  but how linked are you? Talking and networking are easier to do than you think. The fair is full of people wanting to network with you. Are you aware of all the opportunities that lie out there? How can you make the most of the fair? There are several steps to ensure that you get the most from the event. Before: Plan out your day and the stalls you want to visit.  Do you know what companies do  the type of  work youre interested in? You can check out their websites. What do you know about the sector you want to go into? Have you looked at Prospects? This is a great site to start looking at the sectors that interest you and find out more. There are other sites good for specific subject areas. For example, if you are looking for  engineering or technology companies, then why not look at sites like  Gradcracker? During: You can make a really positive impression by dressing smartly or ‘dressing to impress’. You may wonder why you should bother to do this at a Careers Fair but it does demonstrate that you are taking the application process seriously. How will you feel as you wait to speak to a recruiter if you notice other students waiting in their suits? Would you feel uncomfortably out of place then? Wearing similar clothes to the recruiter  might give your confidence a lift. They have probably  dressed smartly to come onto campus, you might want to copy their examples. Something else to consider  your body language. Its great to make eye contact (appropriately not staring) and adopt open friendly body language. This translates as smiling occasionally and uncrossing your arms. Crossed arms can look uncomfortable and at times even defensive. You should also take your hands out of your pockets when you are chatting to the recruiters. You probably won’t need to take copies of your CVs, most companies will ask for application forms. If you do take your CV, then make sure its good! Tailor it to the companies you are targeting and to the skills they are looking for. Demonstrate your relevance to them and their roles. If you have a business card you could take that or you can just ask for theirs! What questions can you ask? Well what do you want to know? Here are some ideas: “I am interested in working overseas and you have offices around the world. What are my chances of working for you in, say Dubai? “What level of work experience would a successful candidate have to demonstrate?” “What are the key skills you look for in this role aside from technical ability?” “How soon would I be given direct client experience within your organisation?” After: If you have made contact with an employer, then what should you do next? Follow it up! Did the person ask you to drop them a CV? Great, tweak your CV so it reflects all the important qualities and experiences the person told you that they look for. If youre making an application, then make sure that you find space to tell them you have spoken to someone at this event and what the conversation gave you in terms of insights into their organisation. Why? Well, youre highlighting your motivation and understanding of what it is that they do. Been given a business card? Great! Now you need to email that person and continue the dialogue  or get connected on LinkedIn. Most of all enjoy the fair and use it to help you to get closer to the career you want!

How to Change Your Career Path If you fancy a change in direction this year, it can be a little intimidating to say the least. When we are in our teens most of us simply can’t decide what we want to do with our lives and that’s perfectly normal. We end up constantly changing our minds until we are pushed in a certain direction by our parents, our teachers or our grades. The thing is, when we reach our mid to late twenties we might find that this isn’t the career path we wanted, and it means that we need to find a new path to take. It can be daunting to change careers at any point in life, but with these tips it will be easier for you to go out and do what you were meant to do. Are you happy? Before you tart leaping into a new job role think about how happy you are in your role right now. Sometimes we hate our jobs and can’t wait to get as far away from them as possible, however sometimes we simply need to change the role within our industry to make us fully satisfied. If you find that you are kind of happy in your job but it isn’t quite what you expected, look closer to home when changing your career because you may not even have to change the company you work for, just the role. What do you love? The most important thing you need to bear in mind when you are looking for a new job is being happy. If you are going to spend most of your week doing one thing, what would you want it to be? It is crucial to work in a job you enjoy because you deserve to be happy. If you do something that you love you will be more likely to excel in the job and do better in the long term too. Think of ideas This is probably the most challenging part of finding a new career. A lot of the time we aren’t 100% sure what we want to do and this can make things very difficult when searching for a job. For example let’s say you love animals: there are a few different options you can go into which involve looking after animals and learning about them too. The key is to write a list of every animal related job you can find and go through them until you find a choice you like. You can do this with any subject and it will make things easier for you when you are looking. Look at your options There are thousands of jobs out there which are ripe for the taking, and you need to be able to narrow this down until you find the on which is perfect for you. Let’s say you want to work in medicine: you will be able to become a doctor wearing those signature Blue Sky Scrubs every single day and saving lives, you could be a nurse, a midwife, a lab worker and loads more. Think about what education you currently have and whether or not you will be able to study medicine or it’s many forms at college or university. If not, you need to look at something which requires less from you. Talk to people The absolute best way to find out what it is really like to work in a given industry is to talk to someone who already does. You can find people through your family and friends or even go on LinkedIn and find someone who is willing to give you  some pointers and let you in in what it is really like working in a certain area. This will allow you to make an informed decision on what you want to do in your life. Shadow If you want to get a sneak peak of your chosen career before you actually start working towards it, ask someone in the industry to let you shadow them for the day. It will give you a good insight into what the job will actually involve and whether or not it is truly something you want to do. Volunteer If you want to try a new job you can always volunteer at the workplace for a few weeks so that you can get a full experience on the job role you will be working with. There are plenty of volunteer terrace options available to you, so take some time to find one close enough to your area to let you give it a try. Educate yourself For pretty much any career you choose to take on in your life there will be things you need to learn and qualifications you will need to gain. Make sure that you fully investigate what qualifications are required for your chosen career and once you have made a decision, go ahead with them alongside your regular job. This will allow you to retain job stability while you work your way up and become ready to apply for jobs you enjoy. Use your skills When applying for a new job make sure that you use your skills to do it. For example if you are applying for a marketing career, instead of simply creating a plain resume or CV and cover letter: use your marketing skills to make a fun and quirky flyer selling yourself to your prospective employer. Using your skill will help you stand out from the crowd and will likely impress your employer more than a simple list of what you can do. Look within the industry We have already touched on this point but we will take a look at it one more time in more depth. If you don’t mind your job but it isn’t everything that you want, it may be a case of swapping to another job within your industry. Lets say you are a technical support analyst but you want to do something more business focused, you could instead become a project manager. If you can find a job role in your workplace which you would rather be doing, then this is the right role for you.

Desperate for your dream job - Know when to stop drilling My career coaching clients tell me all the time, they want to define their passion and define it as specifically as possible so they can then go out there and find the right job. This idea makes sense right? We all want to know what our dream job is. I help them drill down as far as possible in order to figure this out, but what Ive found over the years of doing this as a career coach is that you also need to know when to stop drilling. Here’s a client example: My client Bob and I kept drilling down about what he would be excited about in a career. He basically wanted to own a small business that had a positive impact in people in some way. When you look at this statement, its pretty vague. We kept trying to figure out and what kind of business he wanted to own. One day I realized we needed to stop doing this; his passion was business and running a business, not necessarily about a certain type of business. Of course, there were certain businesses he said he didnt want to run like a sub shop, a dry cleaner, or a business that would harm people or the environment in some way. The point was, that he wanted to own and operate a small business and make it as successful as possible. That was what was fulfilling to him, not what kind of business he was running. Keep this in mind when youre trying to clarify your career direction. You have to narrow it down as far as possible, but you also have to know when to stop. Ideal Career Coach
