How to Change Your Career Path If you fancy a change in direction this year, it can be a little intimidating to say the least. When we are in our teens most of us simply canât decide what we want to do with our lives and thatâs perfectly normal. We end up constantly changing our minds until we are pushed in a certain direction by our parents, our teachers or our grades. The thing is, when we reach our mid to late twenties we might find that this isnât the career path we wanted, and it means that we need to find a new path to take. It can be daunting to change careers at any point in life, but with these tips it will be easier for you to go out and do what you were meant to do. Are you happy? Before you tart leaping into a new job role think about how happy you are in your role right now. Sometimes we hate our jobs and canât wait to get as far away from them as possible, however sometimes we simply need to change the role within our industry to make us fully satisfied. If you find that you are kind of happy in your job but it isnât quite what you expected, look closer to home when changing your career because you may not even have to change the company you work for, just the role. What do you love? The most important thing you need to bear in mind when you are looking for a new job is being happy. If you are going to spend most of your week doing one thing, what would you want it to be? It is crucial to work in a job you enjoy because you deserve to be happy. If you do something that you love you will be more likely to excel in the job and do better in the long term too. Think of ideas This is probably the most challenging part of finding a new career. A lot of the time we arenât 100% sure what we want to do and this can make things very difficult when searching for a job. For example letâs say you love animals: there are a few different options you can go into which involve looking after animals and learning about them too. The key is to write a list of every animal related job you can find and go through them until you find a choice you like. You can do this with any subject and it will make things easier for you when you are looking. Look at your options There are thousands of jobs out there which are ripe for the taking, and you need to be able to narrow this down until you find the on which is perfect for you. Letâs say you want to work in medicine: you will be able to become a doctor wearing those signature Blue Sky Scrubs every single day and saving lives, you could be a nurse, a midwife, a lab worker and loads more. Think about what education you currently have and whether or not you will be able to study medicine or itâs many forms at college or university. If not, you need to look at something which requires less from you. Talk to people The absolute best way to find out what it is really like to work in a given industry is to talk to someone who already does. You can find people through your family and friends or even go on LinkedIn and find someone who is willing to give you some pointers and let you in in what it is really like working in a certain area. This will allow you to make an informed decision on what you want to do in your life. Shadow If you want to get a sneak peak of your chosen career before you actually start working towards it, ask someone in the industry to let you shadow them for the day. It will give you a good insight into what the job will actually involve and whether or not it is truly something you want to do. Volunteer If you want to try a new job you can always volunteer at the workplace for a few weeks so that you can get a full experience on the job role you will be working with. There are plenty of volunteer terrace options available to you, so take some time to find one close enough to your area to let you give it a try. Educate yourself For pretty much any career you choose to take on in your life there will be things you need to learn and qualifications you will need to gain. Make sure that you fully investigate what qualifications are required for your chosen career and once you have made a decision, go ahead with them alongside your regular job. This will allow you to retain job stability while you work your way up and become ready to apply for jobs you enjoy. Use your skills When applying for a new job make sure that you use your skills to do it. For example if you are applying for a marketing career, instead of simply creating a plain resume or CV and cover letter: use your marketing skills to make a fun and quirky flyer selling yourself to your prospective employer. Using your skill will help you stand out from the crowd and will likely impress your employer more than a simple list of what you can do. Look within the industry We have already touched on this point but we will take a look at it one more time in more depth. If you donât mind your job but it isnât everything that you want, it may be a case of swapping to another job within your industry. Lets say you are a technical support analyst but you want to do something more business focused, you could instead become a project manager. If you can find a job role in your workplace which you would rather be doing, then this is the right role for you.

Desperate for your dream job - Know when to stop drilling My career coaching clients tell me all the time, they want to define their passion and define it as specifically as possible so they can then go out there and find the right job. This idea makes sense right? We all want to know what our dream job is. I help them drill down as far as possible in order to figure this out, but what Ive found over the years of doing this as a career coach is that you also need to know when to stop drilling. Hereâs a client example: My client Bob and I kept drilling down about what he would be excited about in a career. He basically wanted to own a small business that had a positive impact in people in some way. When you look at this statement, its pretty vague. We kept trying to figure out and what kind of business he wanted to own. One day I realized we needed to stop doing this; his passion was business and running a business, not necessarily about a certain type of business. Of course, there were certain businesses he said he didnt want to run like a sub shop, a dry cleaner, or a business that would harm people or the environment in some way. The point was, that he wanted to own and operate a small business and make it as successful as possible. That was what was fulfilling to him, not what kind of business he was running. Keep this in mind when youre trying to clarify your career direction. You have to narrow it down as far as possible, but you also have to know when to stop. Ideal Career Coach

It requires an acute sense of priority management, the emotional intelligence and empathy to decipher someones strongest skills and a whole lot of trust.Over the curse of her career, Holder has learned good leadership from some of the best leaders in the business and by learning from her mistakes. Shes now leading a team that problem solves for clients (and drives revenue along the way). And shes doing so at a global manufacturing company, operating in an industry that is traditionally male-dominated.How long have you been in yur current role, and what were you doing previously?I have been in the sales lea der role for one year. Previously, I was working in a business development role focused on growing an underserved market segment for our residential business. Prior to that role, I served as a Territory Manager, calling on residential and light commercial HVAC contractors in the greater Nashville area after graduating from Ingersoll Rands Accelerated Development Program.Whats the first (and/or last) thing you do at work every day?The first thing I do at work in the morning is look at my task list for the day and prioritize. Finding a system to organize and prioritize was critical for me as my responsibilities and job scope changed. Outlook Tasks has been a game changer for me.Whats the most unique or interesting aspect of your job or company?I think whats most unique about Ingersoll Rand is that we are made up of different brands that provide different value to different customers and businesses around the world. I look at problems as opportunities to develop and empower those around me to get creative and implement their ideas.What about outsid e of work?Outside of work, I love to travel and experience new and exciting places, foods and cultures. Im also a self-proclaimed baker, so I love trying new recipes and baking for others.What are you trying to improve on?I am trying to improve on my ability to coach using situational leadership. Situational leadership in short is matching your coaching style to an individuals aptitude and motivation on a particular task or skill. This means that you have to coach differently depending on the individual and their ability and willingness to accomplish the task at hand. It isnt easy. Being skilled at situational leadership coaching will help to elevate the morale and motivation of my team, which will produce better business results. I try to focus and practice getting better at this every day.Whats your favorite mistake?Tough question We all make mistakes I make them every day. Often times, we are our own worst critics. I find that very true for myself. I have spent a lot of time beating myself up for responding in a curt way in a moment where I may have been preoccupied or leid clearly communicating the reason behind why we are pursuing a strategic initiative. I am challenging myself to start looking at these mistakes through the lens of how can I do better next time? Opening our minds to allowing ourselves to fail in order to be better long-term isnt easy, but its working for me.Whats the one career move youve made that youre most proud of?I am most proud that I had the courage to move from a marketing role to an outside sales role. I have a degree and early career experience in marketing, which made it difficult to change directions. However, it was the best decision I ever made. Sales has taught me so much about the customer experience and the importance of considering the customer in every decision that we make as a business. Pursuing non-traditional paths that may be out of ones comfort zone is not only thrilling, its propels your mind to think in a completely different way.What do you love most about your job or your company?I love the endless development opportunities at Ingersoll Rand. I think the driver behind those opportunities is the people that work for the company, as well as the organization acknowledging that companies that have employees with diverse perspectives, experiences, and gender, racial and cultural representation are more successful than those that do not. At Ingersoll Rand, I feel like I can grow, learn and develop with so many wonderful leaders and mentors.What are you currently reading/watching/listening to?Currently, Im about halfway through Becoming by Michelle Obama on Audible and Ive got The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday in the cue. My favorite show that Ive been Netflixing with my husband has been How to get Away with Murder. Im a sucker for thrillers and mysteriesWhats your 1 piece of advice for women who are looking for jobs right now?My advice would be to own your strengths and skills, and dont get bogged down in the details. Often times, women disqualify themselves from opportunities because they dont technically meet all the requirements, or havent mastered all the skills recommended to be successful. Focus on the strengths that you bring to the table and leverage others around you to help you fill in the gaps. It makes a stronger leader to delegate and trust your team to be the subject matter experts than to master the subject on your own.Who is/was the most influential person in your life and why?The most influential person during my childhood was my father. My dad pushed me from a very young age to be kind and listen to others, always do the right thing even if its not easy, and to do the job right. The job may have been dusting when I was a child, but I mastered it As a result, I believe that I have a compassionate heart for others, I put my values and integrity first and I am disciplined in my work. My husband, La kota, is also a huge influence in my life. He is the most intuitive and curious person that I know and he has pushed me to think in ways I didnt know that I could. I have a long list of things I love about him, but his consideration and awareness for how others are motivated, think and feel has pushed me to approach situations with colleagues, friends and family differently. I am grateful for that.Whats the most memorable piece of career advice youve received?It was from our CEO, Mike Lamach. He said chase experiences, not titles.What was the best quality of the best boss youve ever had?I really enjoy working for leaders that are good listeners, and not just because I like to talk a lot Having the ability to listen to peoples ideas even if the leader thinks they may have a better solution is not an easy skill to master. I have been fortunate to work for several leaders that are patient, listen to the ideas or solutions I bring to the table, and let me either tackle the obstacles m yself along the way or jumped in and climbed the hill with me to get to the finish line.
